Work/Life … My Journey to a Healthy Balance (Part 2)

Hello all!  Well it’s been 3.5 months since I sat down and opened my heart about my struggle with work/life balance (you can read it here).  A lot has changed since April 2012.  We enrolled our kiddos into a structured school 4 days a week.  I spend my Fridays with them and only them.  My husband and I have been trying very hard to be hands free in the evenings while they’re home.  So this means keeping each other in check if we see the other on our phones and no computers in the evenings.  I think in today’s society the norm is to always be connected or ‘plugged’ via electronic devices and we decided that we did NOT want that to be the norm for our family.  It was never intentional to be constantly plugged, it just happened with the www and the convenience factor at our fingertips.  We allow our son to play on his iPad but in moderation only.  We enjoy reading to our kiddos and my son is really into coloring and writing right now so we strongly encourage that.  Things on the work/life front are getting better and better daily.

It is by no means perfect.  My hours are currently Mon-Thurs, 10:00 – 4:00; however, Oklahoma had a month of extreme temperatures, exceeding 115° so I had no choice but to reschedule sessions.  This put me working on the weekends but I knew that it was temporary so it was ok.  I know that there are things like this that will come up, especially being a newborn photographer and scheduling sessions around due dates. But to just have a set schedule takes so much stress out of my life.  I know that when I look at my calendar I am looking at those 4 days, no more and no less. My son started Kindergarten last week so that sort of threw a wrench into my scheduling since I have to leave my studio at 2:30 to get him but I will work it out.:)

Then there is the ME thing.  I think everyone that is a mom can agree when I say that all focus on yourself is gone when your little lovelies enter this world.  I know it did for me.  I didn’t care what I looked like, how I dressed, if I wore makeup or not, etc.  When I made a major change to my business in April I also made a major change for myself and my health.  I was the heaviest I had ever been, almost tipping the scales at what I weighed when I delivered my daughter, yikes!  Everything had just spiraled out of control.  So I want to share what has worked for me.

I knew that I was overweight but I would get so frustrated because I knew it would take forever to lose it so I just never tried.  I had worked so hard to build my business and to be a work-from-home-mom that I totally put myself on the back burner. Not intentionally but everything else just took over. The more my business grew the more out of control my work/life balance became. I began traveling more and more so with traveling came eating out. I was always so busy that I was working all hours of the night, running my kids from sitter to sitter and never once realizing that every.single.thing. I put in my mouth was junk. I was a soda addict. I would drink a minimum of 32oz a day… because it was convenient and well… it tasted good!

When I decided to make a change back in April I knew that I had to focus on one thing at a time and I knew that the first thing was my diet. I’m not a cook AT ALL but I have learned how to steam veggies and know how to peel fruit (lol) so that’s about all I eat. Almost every night my husband will throw something on the grill, usually chicken or a pork chop for me.  If you’ve ever heard the saying ‘eating clean’ that is the diet I follow, which isn’t a diet at all.  It’s a lifestyle change.  This is a great site to check out if you’re interested in knowing more about eating clean.  The entire first month I only focused on my eating. Wise words of my trainer…eat clean and train dirty. Getting your eating habits under control is the most important part; 90% of losing weight is your eating habits and the other 10% is working out. So I devoted the entire first month to eating clean. Very minimal sugar and no sugary drinks and tons of fruits and veggies. The first week was tough because I was a 32oz a day soda drinker, yikes! But I knew if I made it a week I could do it. I lost 9 pounds my very first week so that in itself was so motivating for me.

When I knew I had control of my eating I started working out.  That was about a month and a half into my lifestyle change.  I’m now training for my first 5k with my sister and I’m so excited!! We meet at 5 in the morning and the amount of energy I have throughout the day is incredible.  I spend 3 days a week circuit training to build muscle and 3 days a week running for cardio.  I’ve traveled quite a bit over the last month and we’re currently in the process of moving so it’s been challenging and I haven’t been able to work out as much as I’d like but I haven’t gained any weight, yay!

I had a lot of weight to lose and it was very intimidating.  I had a total of 68 pounds to lose to reach my goal of 160 lbs and that is a lot.  So instead of looking at the big number I set smaller, 10 pound goals.  You CAN do it, don’t ever think you can’t.  I follow Jillian Michaels on Facebook and love this quote she posted “You don’t always get what you wish for, you get what you WORK for.”  That is so true on so many levels.  Here is a photo to show what I’ve been working so hard for.  Still have 28 pounds to goal and I know I’ll get there.

Love and Hugs,
Kristen

Sarah - October 11, 2012 - 2:40 pm

Oh, Kristen!! I came to your blog as I love your newborn work & aspire to be like you in photography some day. :) Then I came across this post, and I am literally crying. ?? lol. I am in those same unfit shoes right now, just not taking care of myself, even though I know for everyone in my little family it would be better if I did put that part of me as a priority. It just always seems like there is something/someone else that needs more attention than me, and then I have no energy to go by the time I actually have the time to workout. Thanks for sharing your story. It’s inspiring!! And you go girl!!!! That’s a lot of progress in such a time period. Off to check out the clean eating site. Thanks!

That is so true how mothers will focus on everyone else and forget about ourselves. I am super excited for you. Keep up the great work and I know you will reach your goal weight. Very inspirational to see the huge change and thanks for the update on your successes.

Amanda - August 26, 2012 - 3:24 pm

I have always loved your work and been inspired by it. I’m sitting here crying reading this. I’m EXACTLY where you were and my husband and I literally just got down having a long conversation before I got on to read your blog about what I need to do to lose 70lbs. Truly, thank you SO MUCH for sharing and inspiring me not just in my photography, but personal well being too :)

Kristin Cook - August 25, 2012 - 2:26 pm

Proud of you girl!!!

Laurie W - August 25, 2012 - 10:49 am

Kristen, thank you for opening your heart and sharing your story. You are right, it is a lifestyle change, and you look AMAZING! It’s easy to see your love of life just by looking at your photographs. I was glad to see that you had set a healthy, reasonable goal for your weight loss. One of the challenges of wanting to lose weight, be healthy, be a smaller size, is the constant barrage of advertising that skinny is what makes you beautiful! Ugh! Loving life, living healthy, being happy and loved makes you beautiful. The getting smaller in size is a great bonus! Two years ago I started the same journey exactly as you did. No soda, minimal sugar, healthy snacks, lots of water, gradually adding exercise to the point of cardio kickboxing and running 2 miles before work 3-4 times a week. The energy becomes addicting! I am 53 pounds lighter and have been for almost a year. Your words may be just what someone else needs to make a change! Keep it up!

Rachel Snyder - August 25, 2012 - 8:35 am

WOW!!!! You just rocked my world and inspired me to really work at “balance” in my own life today. Thank you for your honesty and sharing. Congratulations on all your successes!!!

Amy Tuetken - August 24, 2012 - 11:06 pm

This is so motivating and generous of you to share with all of us! You look great and it sounds like you are getting a ‘handle’ on things, so that is awesome! Being a Mom of 3 kiddos, I totally understand your struggles. It happens to us all, you are not alone! Keep us updated and GOOD LUCK!!! :)

Shannon - August 24, 2012 - 9:08 pm

Thank you for sharing not only your journey but the emotions that you experienced. You look wonderful and if I had to guess I would have said you look much skinnier than your “goal weight” of 160!!! WTG. Eating clean is something that I struggle with as well. Thank you for the motivation!!

Chrissy - August 24, 2012 - 2:44 pm

Oh my goodness girl, you rock! I always pop in to your blog to see your wonderful photography and I’ve got to say…you’re doing wonders to yourself! You look awesome! So inspiring! Keep it up!

Brooke Tewell - August 24, 2012 - 2:40 pm

Wow I love this post! If makes me feel motivated! And your story really spoke to me because I was also much smaller before my (2) kids came along and I’m at my heaviest height, ever. So I am so glad to see you’ve come so far in just 4 months and gives me hope I can do the same if I try. Thanks for sharing!

Trcie - August 24, 2012 - 2:16 pm

This is so inspiring. We are about to make a very big change in our lives as well and one big goal is to lose this weight that I have also let creep up again. I can only hope to be as successful as you :) Thanks for sharing your story!

Laurie - August 24, 2012 - 11:44 am

giving back | Rosalie’s Recovery

On June 6, 2012, my hairdresser’s daughter, sweet Rosalie nearly drowned in a neighborhood pool.  She is currently in the hospital fighting for her life.  There is a prayer page created on Facebook; if you could all join me in prayer for this sweet baby girl, that would be awesome.

I am putting two of my handmade twig baskets up for auction.  Simply comment below with your bid (I will have to approve comments so if yours does not show up right away, please be patient).  The starting bid will be $40 on each basket.  I will take the two highest bidders and average them (USA and Canada bidders only, please).  Bidding will close at 7 PM, CST.

All proceeds from the baskets will go to Rosalie’s family to ease the financial burden.  Rosalie has put up the fight of her life before when born very early so we know she is a fighter and with her firecracker personality she is going to pull through.  If you would like to donate to Rosalie’s Recovery, please click on the donate button below.  Every dollar will help.

VENDORS : I would like to organize a sale for Rosalie.  If you have something you’d be willing to donate, please email me using the contact form at the top.  Thank you all so much!

Lindy - July 10, 2012 - 9:25 pm

Did the auction end… (sorry I didn’t dig around before asking)

If auction is still open (I am thinking it is not) would like to offer $200.

I would also love to encourage to allow us to sell/donate items for you to auction and allow those proceeds to help the family. Message me if your interested.

Your so kind soul is touching the heart…. and helping a family in need would bring such joys to us that can do so.

<3
